I accidentally the entire MSO.... but now we're back!
So there were a few days of downtime since I FINALLY lost that server that was hosted in Hot or Not's datacenter cage. I knew it was going to happen sometime, but essentially we had a dedicated server hosting MSO that I wasn't paying for and now it has finally been taken offline. The SysOps guy that looked at the machine was probably like "WTF is this shit?" ::unplug:: Luckily, I setup a system a long-ass time ago to dump the MSO database and all photo resources back to my apartment nightly. I actually have never done a complete restore from scratch, but I'm pleased to say that everything worked out near-perfectly. And so MSO lives on... as usual. The only thing stopping it now is some catastrophic fire at my apartment (knock on wood) or Comcast catches wind of what's going on since hosting a server out of a home cable line is definitely against their terms of service. In any case, I hope a fair amount of you realize that YES, MSO is back online (you are reading this, right?), and it is here to stay. In the near future I'll setup yet another failsafe backup solution in case THIS machine fails... but until then, everyone cross their fingers. Oh and by the way, I fixed the photo-zoom bug that has been plaguing the site for ages just for shits. Hah... oh and I updated the about page accordingly too. Happy Thursday.
Goodbye MSO!
Well, its been a bit over 4 years now and it is time for me to leave Makeshift Online. The site will remain online as long as possible... if it ever goes down lets all cross our fingers that the backups are running smoothly and I can restore it to another server if need be. However, I've always wanted to start another blog with a back-end content management system that isn't so many years old and one that I didn't code when I was 18, hahahhaha. Anyhow, do not fret people... if you love MSO, keep using MSO. Invite your friends to MSO. Keep the community flourishing. If anything, MSO is a unique and wholly independent refuge from all other corporate offerings out there. I hope you all continue to enjoy my work (despite that I haven't done any serious reworking of much in about 2 years). Cheers everyone, its been a wonderful 4 years... thank you all.
Oh and if you're curious as to where my new blog is... its over at monospectra.com running the latest version of wordpress. I haven't quite hashed out the layout to the best of my liking but it'll be a work in progress until I get it perfect. The content of it pretty much mirrors what I would've posted here, but of course gives me more control as a web developer. Epic Pet Wars... the 4 month wild ride that won't stop
So I've been rather busy. You can tell by the fact that this blog has been vacant of a relevant post ever since Amit and I completed the Hot or Not app as consultants (see "Fall Retrospect") below.
Over the course of the past 3 months in development and the last month in improvement and maintenance, we've worked on and released Epic Pet Wars... which is a Pokemon-styled turn-based MMORPG for the iPhone, iPod Touch, Facebook, and its got its own website where you can also play (epicpetwars.com). Screens:
What's crazy though is Apple liked our game so much that they called Amit's cell and asked us to whip up some promotional material and artwork because they wanted to feature us. The result is this landing page here: Epic Pet Wars for iPhone & iPod Touch ... as well as the full promotional treatment we started getting yesterday in the iTunes App Store.
Our custom decorated app page within iTunes.
Featured in the main app store. Not just in Role Playing, not just in Games, but the top level freaking App Store. Needless to say we've gotten a flood of new installs since then, the game is doing great, and our players follow our changes to the game to the T. As far as other things going on... just miscellaneous obscure stuff. I'm going down to socal next week to visit the fam, gonna see pashypit (see mp3 above) in about 2 weeks, probably heading to etd.POP, going to Colorado for a wedding at the end of this month, and the rest remains to be seen. Mich is up here now, keeping Amit and I's poor lost souls company and well taken care of. Good good that she only lives 3 miles from me now .
Hope everyone is having a great spring. I know I am. |
